how biomass is helping stairways stay green

Biomass boilers are all about turning natural products into energy.

For us, that is about taking the waste wood and, to a large extent, sawdust, to power boilers which in turn heat our factories and offices. This cuts our waste and helps bring down our reliance on energy from “the grid” and fossil fuels. We are creating our own renewable energy.

Over the course of a year, we create enough power to heat more than 700 homes for 12 months. It also means we cut waste to landfill. These savings help the business run more efficiently, which helps us give the most competitive prices possible to customers.

recycling wrappings to reduce waste

It’s not just renewable energy where Stairways Midlands is investing to reduce its environmental impact. Cutting waste is essential to working greener in the 21st Century.

To this end, Stairways has gone out of its way to find ways to recycle the tonnes of plastic waste it has each year, which would previously have gone to landfill.

A lot of this category of waste comes from clear plastic wrapping protecting many of the core products that arrive into the group’s manufacturing facilities. Deciding something positive could be done to help the environment, the business launched a recycling strategy that enables plastic waste to be compacted, discarded safely and recycled.

After investing in a baler, Stairways partnered with Clews Recycling who collect it and take it away for recycling by the tonne.

Neil said: “The key thing here is we are keeping tonnes of rubbish out of landfill each year.”

sunny outlook for renewable energy at stairways midlands

The benefits of working more efficiently and reducing impact on the environment are many. Looking at the big picture, all industries should be investigating how they can cut waste, reduce energy use and rethink processes to minimise our effect on nature.

Stairways Midlands has been an early adopter in this respect. Following our substantial investment in biomass boilers, seven years ago we installed solar panels at our Southam plant.

This represented a £110,000 investment in renewable energy, with a total of 336, 235-Watt panels, creating 78kW of energy. This allowed the organisation to create energy to offset electricity costs. Any surplus could be sold back to the National Grid to help increase the portion of total energy in the UK created from renewable sources.
