What drives excellence at Stairways Midlands?

Stairways T&D blog 2

Founded in 1989, Stairways quickly became one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of carpentry and joinery products, thanks to the quality of our products and customer service.

While these are the factors that set us apart, they were only able to do so thanks to the people working with us. Our talented teams are our greatest asset, which is why training and development are among our top priorities.

Our three midlands-based factory units, offering over 85,000 sq. ft of bespoke and mass production capacity, are buzzing with highly skilled production operatives, carpenters and joiners, from apprentices at the beginning of their journeys to highly experienced professionals with decades of experience under their belts.

Our continuous professional development programme not only covers training in practical skills but health & safety and the bigger picture too – from manufacturing techniques to building standards and legal regulations. Through courses, knowledge tests and hands-on training sessions, our team members are equipped with the expertise needed to deliver excellence at every stage of the process.

We also understand the importance of developing the people skills side of things. With the use of our management training programmes, we have supported our senior team to strengthen their leadership and people development skills.

A deep understanding of the products and the needs of our clients, partnered with strong leadership, fuels continual improvement – from innovating new designs to streamlining internal systems.

To attract and retain the best, we give our people opportunities to grow and achieve their full potential. Take Production Manager Andy Clarke – a great example of a Stairways success story.

Starting as an apprentice at 16, Andy’s journey took him from the workshop floor to Production Manager, building an invaluable bank of knowledge and understanding through almost three decades with us. Andy is among a number of very long-serving colleagues, reflecting the value and importance of investing in talent and fostering a culture of growth.
After the success we witnessed with Andy, we continued to invest in apprentices, with our accounts team currently training Lucy, an accounting apprentice and plans in the works to develop a Wood Products Manufacturing programme running for younger workers.

Our dedication to training and development not only ensures our products and service remain sector-leading, but also sets a standard for excellence in the industry as we’re always happy to share our knowledge. For example, two of our senior leadership team recently became Go Construct STEM Ambassadors, sharing their knowledge to help inspire and guide young people towards a fulfilling career in the sector.

Another example of our dedication to development is through our CITB membership, which allows us to directly support the industry’s training fund through annual payments.

Our recipe for success

So, what’s the secret sauce behind Stairways Midlands’ success? Investing in our people and being generous with our expertise. This is how we foster growth and fuel innovation in our sector, as well as ensuring the highest standards of service and products for our customers.
